SpaceClaim 2007+ Challenge

SpaceClaim 2007+ Challenge

SpaceClaim CAD Design Challenge

How to Play

1. Download and install SpaceClaim Professional 2007+*. You'll be sent a link to additional online resources in the confirmation email after you download the software, and you can watch this video for some tips on getting started with SpaceClaim 2007+.

2. Make the changes you need to your models, and capture it on video. You can use your cellphone or digital camera in movie mode, a digital camcorder, or a screen recording tool such as Camtasia Studio.

View the recommendations and restrictions for file submissions here.

3. Submit the video here. Submit the CAD model file or neutral file here. You must submit the CAD model file as part of the entry so that we can validate the submission.

4. That's it! You might be one of our 3 monthly winners, or our grand prize winner!

As a contest participant, you agree to allow SpaceClaim to promote your participation and agree to the use of the submitted video and graphics (but not the actual CAD file) in various marketing activities including website posting, news releases and on-line and print media. SpaceClaim will not use or share the CAD model file outside of SpaceClaim for any reason without your express written consent.

No purchase is necessary.

Why are we doing this?

We're living in a multi-CAD world. And here at SpaceClaim, we're working hard to break down the barriers between CAD systems to encourage collaboration among different departments in an organization, and among different companies working together on projects. When everyone can participate on a project without being penalized for using their system of choice, everyone wins.

We're a young, fast moving company, and we don't want to work in an “ivory tower.” We welcome you, the engineering community, to help us shape SpaceClaim to be the best it can be. And by helping us, you're ultimately making SpaceClaim better for you and for the entire community.

So we’d like your help. We want to know if and how we can help you. We want to understand your processes, and we want to know what kinds of models you need SpaceClaim to be able to handle. By helping us, you are taking an active role in shaping SpaceClaim to meet your needs and the needs of the marketplace, and helping to push the entire industry towards achieving CAD interoperability despite the prevalence of proprietary file formats.

What are some solutions that you can address with SpaceClaim? There are many different scenarios where people need to import and modify 3D CAD models in a lightweight, flexible, dependency-free manner. Some common ones include:

  • Design Reviews. SpaceClaim rocks in design reviews, where geometry from multiple systems needs to be imported into a single workspace, and various team members need to collaboratively change models to eliminate interferences and fix other problems. Often, a change may have consequences that are not easily visualized unless it can be actually made in the context of the assembly. Being able to generate the precise solid model geometry in real time at the design review can save countless hours downstream when it causes other, unforeseen, complications.

  • ECRs. Many downstream users of CAD models may need to suggest changes to a design. Attaching a file to the ECR with the exact desired changes, in the CAD operator's native file format, reduces the chances that the requested changes will be misinterpreted or incorrectly modeled.
  • CAD-Neutral Interoperability. Often, downstream users of a design need to import the CAD geometry into analysis, CAM, process planning, or other software, fix gaps and heal the geometry, simplify or modify the geometry for meshing or nc programming, and - for FE analysis - iterate on the geometry based on the results of the analysis. Waiting for the designer to make the required changes is a slow and inefficient process.

  • IP Protection. Many times manufacturers will need to hide the details and internal components of designs prior to sharing them with suppliers and other outside entities.

  • Method Neutral Modifications. Sometimes modifications to complex parts (that perhaps were built by others) fail regeneration in their native CAD systems, and the “clock is ticking,” and a tool for “unsticking stuck models” can come in handy.

So download our software, try it out on your parts and let us know how we do!

What's in it for you?

  • You can really help us out.

  • You can stump us. We know, it's fun to “stump the chump.” And actually, we really want you to! Because we know that SpaceClaim isn't perfect (after all, who is ;-) ). But by giving us really challenging tasks, you're helping us expand our product and make SpaceClaim better, faster.

  • Exposure. OK, so maybe it's not quite like being on Letterman, but your model will be up for all to see, and if you offer up one of the more interesting challenges (either because it is technically mind bending, or just plain funny), your name will be up in lights.

  • Swag. And not just cheap, boring swag. We're giving away licenses of SpaceClaim, and the grand prize is a fully loaded laptop with a one year license of SpaceClaim!

*The 30 day trial version of SpaceClaim 2007+ includes full functionality and native import of Pro/E, UGS NX, CATIA v4, Solidworks, and Inventor file formats. Challenge participants' computers must meet the minimum system requirements.
